Children's and Youth Hospice
Relief, relaxation and time together
The Bethel Children's and Youth Hospice offers children and young people with a life-limiting illness a protected environment in which they can spend time together with their families. In their own way and at their own pace. Caring for the guests and their environment requires a high level of professional and personal expertise.
Take a deep breath thanks to loving care
Sonja Klotz gently lifts her daughter out of the wheelchair and into the seat of the swing. Paulina rocks back and forth, unable to speak. "She's looking forward to the swings. I can see that in her face," says Sonja Klotz as she gives her ten-year-old daughter a gentle push. The sun is shining through the dense foliage of tall trees that tower over the garden of the Bethel Children's and Youth Hospice. Frogs are giving a concert at a pond near the centre.
Paulina and her mother come to this oasis for a few days several times a year. The severely disabled girl receives loving round-the-clock care and nursing there. Paulina has trisomy 18, she is severely mentally and physically impaired and suffers from a severe heart and lung malformation, among other things. Four and a half years ago, she also developed epilepsy. Paulina and her mother find some respite and relief at the Bethel Children's and Youth Hospice.
"I can dedicate more time to her here than I can at home, since I have to work from home," says Sonja Klotz, mother to four children. Speaking with other affected parents also helps her.
The two of them also regularly visit the Bethel Children's Centre to have Paulina's medication adjusted. "We also feel very well looked after there," emphasises Sonja Klotz.
