Talent at the keys
There is a contemplative silence in the chapel. The first two candles are burning on the Advent wreath and the Christmas star is already shining above it under the ceiling, bathing the room in warm light. Then the first notes of a Christmas classic break the silence: drums, piano and vocals join forces to sing the Spanish "Feliz Navidad", or "Merry Christmas".
Rehearsals take place in the chapel of Eben-Ezer, a foundation belonging to Bethel. The members of a band meet there once a week to make music together. The group is inclusive; men and women with and without disabilities play together under professional guidance. The programme includes popular pieces. And now, during Advent, also some Christmas songs, such as "Wir sagen euch an den lieben Advent" or "Gloria-Hallelujah".
Stefan Truglitza has been a member for one and a half years. However, he has been playing his instrument, the piano, since his music lessons at the foundation's Topehlen special school. "The piano is a beautiful instrument," he says. Above all, he likes the sound. And the versatility, which is also reflected in the pieces he plays. "I listen to the radio a lot at home. Charts and whatever else is new," says the 35-year-old. He now lives in his own flat and receives outpatient care. This means he can always listen to what he likes - including ballads played by the band.
Together they give many concerts in Bethel. The band recently played at a youth service. The songs are spot on and everything went well. "You're always a bit nervous," says Stefan Truglitza. "But after the gigs, you're happy when everything has gone well. And it's a great feeling when you can show off your talent."
